Why Get More Girls of Color on Bikes?
We’ve made it a goal to recruit girls at an equal or greater level than boys since the inception of our team in 2017. It’s hard work, as any high school mountain bike team who’s tried can attest. Currently, girls make up about 20% of high school mountain bikers throughout the nation. NICA isn’t collecting statistics on people of color participating in their sport, at least none that they’ve published, so the numbers of girls of color participating are even more murky. But it doesn’t take more than a glance at any team’s website or social media or a visit to a race to see that girls of color are by far the minority. So, we’re taking the challenge of recruiting and retaining girls and making an effort to go a step further. We’re a work in progress, but we’re proud to be releasing this and excited to see who’s interest in mountain biking we might spark through the viewing of this video.
THANKS
The video was conceived, filmed, edited and narrated by our very own Coach Nancy Hernandez who just took off for a two month bike packing trip in Chile. Thank you for making this video a reality Nancy. The video features returning rider Guadlupe Miranda and a host of other girl riders from our first two years as a team. Thank you Guadalupe for, once again, being brave and trying something new to help encourage others to give mountain biking a try.
Our season starts Sunday January 19th. We’re having some Fun Rides to give people a chance to try out mountain biking and our team. Learn more at https://www.richmondcomposite.com/funrides
